Morning Short #7 – Clay

8Yet you, Lord, are our Father.
We are the clay, you are the potter;
we are all the work of your hand.” –Isaiah 64:8

Think back to when you were in grade school, and you were playing with Play-Doh, or putty. Back then, it was an adventure—what could you make out of this random, extraordinary substance? Anything you could possibly imagine, right? The scope of what you could create was limited only by your childlike imagination, and as a kid, that’s a really wide scope! So you set to work and put your hands deep into it; you spent what seemed like immeasurable time trying to painstakingly make the perfect elephant, or the greatest spaceship you could think of.

You knew when everything was said and done, and you showed the finished product to your friends, parents and teachers, that it was going to be amazing—the best thing you’ve ever made.

Guess what? That’s how God imagines you, too.

Today, when you put your whole faith in Him, keep this in mind: not only is it just a painstaking process for you to be crafted as clay by the ultimate potter, but it’s the potter’s sheer and utter joy to make you into what you will be! He delights in using his vast imagination—and that’s a whole lot of imagination beyond us, because Dad’s omniscient—and is excited, just as you were, to see the end result! God is absolutely pumped to be working on you, the clay, and He, the potter, because you are an amazing creation, and are being lovingly and joyously shaped for His purposes.

Rejoice in the process of being yet still an unfinished piece of pottery. There’s a whole lot of excitement and love going into this process of making you…you.

Morning Short #6 – Gossip

“A gossip betrays a confidence,
but a trustworthy person keeps a secret.” –Proverbs 11:13 (NIV)

Being completely real, it’s extremely easy to gossip. It takes very little effort to think of someone and find fault, and want to talk about it. It’s even easier to hear personal things from someone—meant for only your ears—and tell someone else. That’s the weird thing about being human—we inherently want to judge, and want to find ourselves an excuse to slander even our friends. Think back to when you whispered words to a friend about someone else. Was it fruitful? Did you feel that you gained anything from it, besides maybe inflating your pride? Did it accomplish anything?

The answer is more often than not a resounding no. And there’s a reason for that—God doesn’t deal in un-truths and falsehoods, either. He doesn’t turn his back, go to one of his angels or another brother or sister in Christ and say blatant lies about you. Why? Because He works in absolute love, and that means transparency and honesty. He comforts you with the knowledge that what He has said—and is saying to you—is always 100% real, 100% the truth, and 100% from a place of affection. What’s more, He knows your darkest secrets, your inner most thoughts, and keeps them locked up.

He has no need to spread your baggage to everyone and their mothers, because your baggage isn’t most important to Him. Your heart is.

Today, believe in trust through truth. Know that love is reciprocated from an honest and truthful place. Keep in mind that God knows you inside and out, but your heart is the most precious thing—not your dirty laundry.

Morning Short #5 – Task

“Then King David said to all the assembly, ‘My son Solomon—God has chosen him alone—is young and inexperienced. The task is great because the temple will not be for man but for the Lord God.” -1 Chronicles 29:1

This day, take a moment to pause and get a grip. In this very moment in your life, you may be facing immense difficulty. You may be staring down seemingly insurmountable odds, and tasks that look too hard to overcome and conquer. But take heart, and be courageous!

God has chosen you for a specific task to fulfill! You are set apart to do some great things, big or small, all for kingdom purposes! Your deficiencies—whether in knowledge or skill—that you have in order to tackle such a task are okay; because only through your weaknesses is God, and your brothers and sisters, able to help you grow.

Remember that the task is great not because it is impossibly difficult…but because it’s for God and a grander purpose.

Morning Short #4 – Calm

4Say to him, ‘Be careful, keep calm and don’t be afraid. Do not lose heart because of these two smoldering stubs of firewood—because of the fierce anger of Rezin and Aram and of the son of Remaliah.”-Isaiah 7:4 (NIV)

This morning as you start your day, feel free to take a deep, slow breath. When you see the smoke and the fire approaching in your life—or if you are in the fire—feel a sense of calm. Latch on to the knowledge that God has instilled in you: that you are His son or daughter, and that He is most definitely looking out for you! No matter what your situation is, or how suffocating the smoke from that fire may be to you, He is providing you air. He’s giving you room to breathe.

It could be men plotting against you, looking out for themselves and ill intentions. It could be concern for your family or close friends, and their situations that you feel responsible for. Maybe your job isn’t working out as smoothly as you’d hoped, or you’re jobless and searching for the next opportunity. Either way, stay calm—you have the Heavenly Father fighting and working in your corner. And not only is He working for your best interests; He loves you and knows your pains!

Do not be afraid. Do not let intimidation cripple you. Find your calmness in God this morning, and let Him live inside of you.

Morning Short #3 – Rest

31Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.” –Mark 6:31 (NIV)

Most days we just want to keep toiling. We see the work that needs to be put in, the sacrifices that need to be made, and the sweat that needs to be poured out. It’s natural—you want to get what you set out for—you want to get stuff done and be efficient, whether that be in work, relationships, or even leisure activities. Your world—our world—is always on-the-go. The earth doesn’t stop for anyone, right?

Today, find some time to really rest. If, like the apostles, you find yourselves doing awesome work but don’t have the time to nourish yourself—the Spirit that lives in you, or your mind and body—you will burn out, quick. You’ll forget the meaning of your walk; you will forget the reason why you love what you do and why God gave that purpose to you; and invariably, you will lose out on progress because you don’t have any energy left.

Whether that be ten, solid minutes getting fed in the Word; a half hour journaling and reflecting; or even five minutes just letting Him know you’re thankful—take some time to drown out the noise and really love the rest He has given you.

The Morning Short #2 – Loved

16And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.” –1 John 4:16 (NIV)

This morning, as it’s Valentine’s Day, remember that there is a love that encapsulates all of you. It lives within you—it is a part of you. And that love is so great, that no matter where you are right now—no matter what you think you did in the past—it’s still there. He still loves you, no strings attached. Today, when you say “I love you,” to your loved one, or think about the act of love, remember the immense, real love God has for you.

Show love to others today, not just because it’s a holiday about it. Show love because God loves you, and you want to reciprocate that and emulate that for those around you.

The Morning Short #1 – Move Mountains

22 And Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God. 23 Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him.”-Mark 11:22-23 (ESV)

This morning, as you look onto the day ahead, don’t be intimidated. In fact, do the opposite—be bold! Know that if you truly believe, at the depths of your heart, in God’s plan, He will deliver. Speak to yourself today, as Jesus has said, in confidence, “I will.” You have mountains to move! Start moving them with your spirit guiding you.

You have the power to make things happen when you trust that they will, and that the Lord has already given them to you.

Just go and make it happen!
